Ukrainian forces launched a surprise offensive inside Russia, expanding their foothold in Kursk with geolocated footage showing them capturing settlements and using electronic warfare to their advantage. Reports suggest they have been effective in using HIMARS to block Russian reinforcements. The conflict has seen heavy casualties on both sides, with Ukrainian President Zelenskyy claiming 38,000 Russian troops lost in Kursk so far. Ukraine has destroyed a significant amount of Russian equipment and taken nearly 900 prisoners of war. Russia’s ability to replace its tanks and armoured vehicles is in question, as they have resorted to pulling Soviet-era armour out of storage. Ukraine, on the other hand, has invested heavily in drones and long-range missile systems to bolster its defence. The conflict shows no signs of abating, with Russian forces intensifying attacks in Donetsk and Ukrainian forces preparing for more long-range strikes. Ukrainian Prime Minister Shmyal has announced plans to significantly increase the country’s defence industrial capacity. The potential for peace talks and the involvement of European peacekeepers in Ukraine, as well as the prospect of Ukraine joining NATO, are also being discussed. President-elect Donald Trump has pledged to end the war, offering hope for a resolution to the ongoing conflict.
