What measures can world powers take to prevent Israel from targeting Gaza’s medical facilities? | Escalating tensions in the Israel-Palestine conflict

The United Nations has issued a dire warning that the health system in Gaza is on the brink of total collapse due to relentless Israeli attacks. Currently, only 16 out of the 36 hospitals in Gaza are operational, and even these are only able to provide partial services. The UN has documented over 650 Israeli attacks on medical facilities since the beginning of the Israel-Palestine conflict in October 2023, resulting in the deaths of at least 1,054 health workers. Israel claims that Hamas fighters are using hospitals as bases, but has not provided substantial evidence to support this claim.

The situation in Gaza has raised concerns about the possibility of preventing the collapse of the health system. Imran Khan hosted a discussion on this issue, with guests including Mohammed Abu Mughaisib from Doctors Without Borders (MSF), human rights lawyer Michael Lynk, and orthopaedic surgeon Mohammed Adeel Khaleel, who recently returned from Gaza.

The guests emphasized the urgent need for a ceasefire to protect medical facilities and personnel in Gaza. They also called for greater international pressure to hold those responsible for attacks on health infrastructure accountable. They highlighted the importance of ensuring safe access to medical care for the people of Gaza, who are already facing severe challenges due to the ongoing conflict.

The international community must take immediate action to prevent the complete collapse of Gaza’s health system and protect the lives of civilians in the region.
