Sheriff’s Office Shares Video of Remotely Triggered Avalanche in Summit County

Avalanche Risk Warning as Snow Storm Approaches Summit County

SUMMIT COUNTY, CO – The Summit County Sheriff’s Office (SCSO) has issued an urgent reminder regarding the heightened risk of avalanche danger in the region, coinciding with a recent incident on Saturday morning. A video shared by the department shows an avalanche that was remotely triggered by their Special Operations Technicians on Peak 1, near Frisco, at approximately 11 a.m. Fortunately, no individuals were caught or injured in this event.

The SCSO has underscored the importance of knowledge and optimal terrain selection for those venturing into the backcountry, particularly as a special avalanche advisory remains in effect throughout the weekend. As conditions evolve, outdoor enthusiasts are strongly encouraged to stay informed and exercise caution.

Adding to the risk, Saturday has been designated as a First Alert Weather Day, with a winter storm moving across Colorado. Forecasters predict that moderate snowfall will commence in the mountains later in the afternoon, increasing in intensity throughout the evening and into Sunday. Estimates suggest that the high country may accumulate between four to ten inches of snow by Sunday afternoon.

For the latest avalanche forecasts and further safety tips, the public is directed to refer to the Colorado Avalanche Information Center’s website.

Stay safe and informed as winter weather brings both beauty and risk to Summit County’s outdoor activities.
