Democratic Attorney General Phil Weiser has officially announced his bid for the 2026 gubernatorial race in Colorado. Weiser, who has been serving as the state’s Attorney General since 2018, will be term-limited in 2026. He is the first Democrat to declare his candidacy for the governor’s seat.
Six other candidates have also filed paperwork for the race, including three Republicans, one “non-partisan,” two unaffiliated candidates, and one from the American Constitution Party. Weiser, who is expected to file his candidacy paperwork with the Secretary of State soon, has an impressive background in law and government. He has clerked for U.S. Supreme Court Justices Byron R. White and Ruth Bader Ginsburg and served as Deputy Assistant Attorney General under President Barack Obama. He has also worked as a senior advisor for technology and innovation in the White House.
Weiser’s announcement highlighted his efforts to block the Kroger-Albertsons merger and protect water in the San Luis Valley from being piped to Douglas County. He is a first-generation American, the son and grandson of Holocaust survivors, and currently resides in Denver with his family.
