Press Release: Denver7 Investigates Special Report Highlights Accountability in 2023
Denver, CO – Denver7 Investigates, led by investigative reporters Tony Kovaleski and Natalie Chuck, will air a special half-hour report showcasing their key stories from the past year focused on holding authorities accountable.
In October, Kovaleski uncovered a controversial incident involving a Colorado Bureau of Investigation (CBI) agent who was caught on body-worn camera using a racial slur. Allegations of preferential treatment surfaced, suggesting the agent received leniency due to a long-standing friendship with CBI Director Chris Schaefer. The matter has prompted a third-party review of the CBI’s handling of the situation.
Adding to the accountability theme, Chuck reported in August on troubling allegations from insiders at Columbian Elementary School. Teachers claimed a second-grade educator had been drinking on the job during the current school year. Despite Principal Drew Hall being alerted back in November, action was delayed until April when another staff member resorted to the Safe2Tell service. Following this investigation, Hall has been placed on administrative leave and is no longer employed with Denver Public Schools.
Another highlight from Denver7 Investigates included the story of Riggs, a former K-9 with the Denver Sheriff’s Department who was at risk of euthanasia. After Denver7 raised concerns, Riggs was spared and has since found a loving new home.
