Spurs-Knicks Christmas game comes to life with animated elements

NEW YORK (AP) — This Christmas Day will feature a unique basketball game at Walt Disney World, where Mickey, Minnie, Goofy, and Wemby will be playing in an animated game. The real game, however, will take place at Madison Square Garden, where the San Antonio Spurs will face the New York Knicks in a game televised on ABC and ESPN, streamed on Disney+ and ESPN+, and with an animated alt-cast broadcast on ESPN2 and Disney+.

The special “Dunk the Halls” game at Disney was Mickey Mouse’s Christmas wish, where Disney characters will get to play alongside NBA players like Victor Wembanyama. Unlike previous alternate animated broadcasts in sports, the level of detail and cooperation required to create accurate appearances of the players’ faces and hairstyles was unprecedented.

The setting for the game will be Main Street USA at the Magic Kingdom, with Cinderella’s castle serving as the backdrop. Educational explainers will help Disney experts who may be new to basketball understand the game, and advanced visualization technology will allow the animated players to mirror the movements and plays made by the real players at Madison Square Garden.

Scheduled as the leadoff game for the NBA’s Christmas slate, the animated game between the Spurs and Knicks was chosen due to the international appeal of Wembanyama, as it will be prime time in France during the game. The production will also feature recognizable animated faces such as NBA Commissioner Adam Silver and Santa Claus controlling the SkyCam.

Overall, this unique Christmas Day basketball experience combines the magic of Disney with the excitement of NBA basketball, creating an unforgettable event for fans of both sports and animation.
