The Future of Arapahoe Basin under Alterra’s Ownership

Leon Joseph Littlebird has been skiing at Arapahoe Basin every winter for the past 71 years. He describes the area as his “fountain of youth” with its unpretentious vibe and emotional roots. When news broke that Alterra Mountain Company was acquiring the classic ski area, Littlebird initially had concerns about potential changes to the affordable and charming atmosphere he cherished. However, after speaking with A-Basin’s long-time chief operating officer, Alan Henceroth, who assured him that the company’s goal was to preserve the magic of A-Basin, Littlebird felt more at ease.

Alterra, known for its ownership of ski resorts and the Ikon Pass, has stated that they do not plan on making major changes to A-Basin. The company values the authenticity and connection A-Basin has with its loyal visitors, and they intend to keep the resort true to its roots. With a new master development plan in the works to enhance the skiing experience, Alterra aims to focus on improving facilities and guest arrival experiences while maintaining the unique vibe of the mountain.

Locals like Che Caballero, who has heard positive feedback about Alterra’s management of other mountains, are optimistic about the future of A-Basin under new ownership. The emphasis on maintaining the autonomy and authenticity of the resort, as demonstrated in Alterra’s history with other acquisitions like Steamboat, provides hope for A-Basin enthusiasts like Littlebird. The recent sight of Alterra’s helicopter aiding in avalanche control at A-Basin was seen as a positive sign of the company’s commitment to investing in the mountain’s upkeep and safety.
