Comprehensive Review of All CBI Cases Associated with Missy Woods; 1,000 Cases Affected

Press Release: CBI Investigation Reveals Major DNA Mishandling by Former Scientist

DENVER — A thorough investigation by the Colorado Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has found that over 1,000 cases were compromised due to the mishandling of DNA evidence by former forensic scientist Yvonne "Missy" Woods. Woods, who served CBI for nearly 30 years, left the agency in November 2023 amid allegations of serious misconduct that came to light during an internal inquiry initiated in September 2023.

The investigation revealed that Woods intentionally omitted crucial information from official criminal justice records and tampered with DNA testing results, violating CBI’s Code of Conduct and laboratory policies. While CBI clarified that Woods did not falsify DNA matches or fabricate profiles, her deviation from standard testing protocols has raised significant concerns about the reliability of the results she provided.

As part of CBI’s review, 1,003 cases were identified as affected by Woods’ actions. The agency announced that they would be allocating approximately $7.5 million to retest the samples she handled. In a statement, CBI emphasized the importance of maintaining integrity in forensic science, stating, "New information, if discovered, will be thoroughly vetted."

Alongside the internal investigation, a criminal investigation into Woods’ conduct has also commenced and remains ongoing. Ryan Brackley, Woods’ attorney, confirmed that she is fully cooperating with both investigations.

The findings of the investigation illuminate serious flaws in CBI’s procedures, prompting a call for reforms to ensure the reliability of forensic evidence in the criminal justice system. The CBI’s dedication to addressing these issues underscores the importance of upholding the integrity of investigative work in Colorado.
