Local Youth Nonprofit Brings "The Milagro Beanfield War" to Life

DENVER – In a remarkable collaboration that blends art and social change, Millie Duran, founder of Casa Milagro Youth Solutions, successfully adapted John Nichols’ renowned social-justice novel, “The Milagro Beanfield War,” for the stage. Inspired by Nichols’ work, Duran reached out to Rick Smith, owner of The Brodsky Bookshop, seeking the author’s permission to create a teen adaptation. Just before Nichols’ passing on November 27, 2023, he granted Duran this authorization, paving the way for a transformative theater experience.

Duran established Casa Milagro to support at-risk youth impacted by various forms of abuse and neglect. By utilizing theater as a healing tool, her organization helps young people confront their challenges in a safe environment. “Theater helps these kids express themselves while tackling real-life issues,” said Tony Garcia, executive artistic director of Su Teatro Performing Arts Center and Duran’s collaborator.

In less than a year, Duran’s ensemble of 11 students, aged 13-18, crafted their own script from the novel, tackling themes of land rights and social justice. They toured schools and community centers across southern Colorado, culminating in performances at Centennial High School in San Luis and Denver’s Su Teatro. Many participants felt a personal connection, as some are direct descendants of the landowners depicted in the story.

The project not only empowered participants but also fostered community engagement, receiving enthusiastic applause with each performance. San Luis School Superintendent Joe Garcia noted, “This opportunity to engage with such a rich cultural history will last a lifetime for these students.”

As Casa Milagro continues its mission, Duran recently took a new group of disengaged youth to a workshop in Winter Park, affirming her commitment to empowering young leaders through art.
