AAA Anticipates Record-Breaking Holiday Travel with Over 119 Million Expected to Hit the Roads and Skies

Record Number of Travelers Expected This Holiday Season

As the holiday season approaches, a record number of Americans are set to travel, with over 119 million expected to journey at least 50 miles from home between Saturday and New Year’s Day. The figure, projected by the auto club AAA, surpasses the previous high set in 2019. This year, U.S. airlines anticipate carrying about 54 million passengers during a 19-day travel window, reflecting a 6% increase compared to last year.

The busiest travel days are forecasted for Friday, Sunday, and the days immediately following Christmas. The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) estimates it will screen around 40 million passengers during this busy period. According to AAA, 90% of travelers will be opting for road trips instead of flying, with gasoline prices remaining stable at about $3.05 per gallon, prompting families to drive rather than fly.

However, the unfolding situation surrounding a potential government shutdown could impact holiday travel experiences, particularly if it results in extended delays at airports. TSA officials warn that while essential workers will continue to operate without pay, longer wait times could ensue if staff begin calling in sick.

Moreover, airlines are faced with operational challenges, as any disruptions—be it due to poor weather or technology failures—can significantly affect travel schedules. With many flights already sold out, passengers might find limited options if cancellations occur, particularly with budget airlines.

Travel experts are recommending that passengers stay informed and consider rebooking through airlines rather than seeking last-minute flights independently, which could be exorbitantly priced. As travelers prepare for the festivities, planning for future trips is also advised, with January and February being optimal months to secure 2025 bookings, especially for spring breaks and summer vacations.
