Official retraction of Didier Raoult’s study on hydroxychloroquine use for COVID-19

A study conducted by French doctor Didier Raoult on the use of hydroxychloroquine as a treatment for COVID-19 has been retracted from the International Journal of Antimicrobial Agents due to concerns over ethical policies and research conduct. The retraction was conducted following an investigation by an independent microbiology consultant, Dr Jim Gray, who found flaws in the methodology and conclusions of the study.

The retraction means that the paper is now considered unreliable and should not be used as a reference for future research. Additionally, three of the paper’s authors have requested to have their names removed from the article. Hydroxychloroquine, a medication primarily used for treating malaria, was initially touted as a potential treatment for COVID-19 by Raoult. However, the US Food and Drug Administration revoked its emergency authorization due to a lack of evidence of effectiveness and safety concerns.

Raoult, who has been suspended from practicing medicine, is currently engaged in a legal battle over the suspension and is under investigation by the Marseille public prosecutor’s office for the quality of research and care activities at his former institute. The controversy surrounding the retracted study highlights the importance of ethical research conduct and the need for thorough scrutiny of scientific studies, especially during a global health crisis like the COVID-19 pandemic.
