Hip-hop star Megan Thee Stallion has filed a petition in Los Angeles Superior Court seeking a restraining order against rapper Tory Lanez, who is currently serving a 10-year sentence for shooting her in the feet back in 2020. The petition alleges that Lanez is using third parties to continue harassing and traumatizing Megan while he is behind bars. Lanez’s lawyers have not yet responded to the request, and a court hearing is scheduled for January 9.
The filing mentions that bloggers acting on Lanez’s behalf are spreading false information and casting doubt on Megan’s allegations. This comes after Megan filed a lawsuit against a blogger for cyberstalking and promoting false information on Lanez’s behalf. The protective order issued previously is no longer in effect, highlighting a flaw in the criminal justice system.
Lanez is currently being held at a California prison, where he was convicted of assault with a firearm, possession of an unregistered firearm, and discharging a firearm with negligence. Despite being sentenced to 10 years, Lanez’s lawyers are appealing his conviction. The incident between Megan and Lanez caused a stir in the hip-hop community, sparking conversations about Black victims’ reluctance to speak to police, gender politics, online toxicity, and the protection of Black women.
Megan’s testimony during the trial revealed that Lanez had shot her after a party, leading to a tumultuous legal and cultural saga that shed light on issues faced by Black women in the music industry. The petition seeks to prevent further harassment and trauma from Lanez as Megan continues to move forward from the incident.
