New York prosecutors have provided a detailed timeline of the events leading up to the murder of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson and the subsequent actions of the accused killer, Luigi Mangione. The timeline reveals how Mangione arrived in New York City under a fake identity 10 days before the murder, checked into a hostel, and used a fake ID to evade recognition. On the day of the murder, Mangione left the hostel early in the morning and was seen lingering outside the Hilton hotel in Midtown. He then purchased items from a nearby Starbucks, waited outside the hotel fully masked, and ultimately shot Thompson with a 3D-printed ghost gun equipped with a silencer. Mangione then fled the scene on an e-bike and later took a cab to the northern end of Manhattan before leaving the state.
Despite his efforts to evade authorities, Mangione was arrested at a McDonald’s in Altoona, Pennsylvania, where he was found with a 3D-printed handgun, ammunition, and a fake ID used during his time in New York. The Manhattan District Attorney described the murder as a well-planned and targeted act intended to cause shock and intimidation. Mangione has been indicted on multiple charges, including first-degree murder and murder as a crime of terrorism. Thompson was pronounced dead at the hospital shortly after the attack.
