Two Denver Men Sentenced for Series of Bank Robberies

DENVER — In a significant ruling, two Denver men have received lengthy federal prison sentences for their involvement in a string of bank robberies across the Denver metro area during the summer of 2023. Mitchell Leland Baca, 33, has been handed a 224-month sentence, while his accomplice, 28-year-old Jaki Ravion Joseph Martin-Birch, was sentenced to 170 months.

Both defendants pleaded guilty to multiple charges, including several counts of bank robbery and firearm possession in connection with violent crimes. Between June 14 and July 24, 2023, Baca and Martin-Birch orchestrated five armed robberies in Denver and Aurora, threatening bank employees with weapons and escaping with thousands of dollars in cash.

"We will not tolerate violent, brazen crimes like bank robbery," stated Acting U.S. Attorney for the District of Colorado, Matt Kirsch. His remarks underscore a commitment to prosecuting individuals who engage in such criminal activities, serving as a warning to others who might consider similar actions.

FBI Denver Special Agent in Charge Mark Michalek emphasized the importance of cross-jurisdictional cooperation in tackling such crimes. "The FBI Rocky Mountain Safe Streets Task Force is uniquely positioned to investigate and prosecute these violent offenders, ensuring they are kept off our streets to prevent further harm to the public," Michalek stated.

These sentences mark a decisive step in combating a wave of bank robberies in the region, reinforcing the federal commitment to uphold safety and justice in the community. As federal law enforcement continues its efforts, they aim to deter such criminal behavior and promote a safer environment for all Coloradans.
