The FBI has received over 5,000 reported drone sightings in the last month, generating about 100 tips that have been closely examined. The sightings are believed to include lawful commercial drones, hobbyist drones, and law enforcement drones, as well as other types of aircraft mistakenly reported as drones. The agencies involved have not identified any anomalous activity that presents a national security or public safety risk. There are over 1 million drones lawfully registered with the FAA, and the number is expected to increase over time.
In a separate incident in Boston, two men were charged with conducting a hazardous drone operation too close to Logan International Airport. Robert Duffy, 42, and Jeremy Folcik, 32, were charged with trespassing and breaking and entering. They were freed without bail pending trial, while a third suspect was being sought by police. Their attorney claimed the incident would not have been a big issue if it had occurred before the recent attention on drone sightings. He stated that the incident was a “timing issue” and that they would have simply been told not to film in the area.
