Conservation biologist Justin LeClaire and PhD candidate Donny Persaud are concerned about the impact of SpaceX’s Starbase launch site on the surrounding environment in Boca Chica, Texas. They have observed damaged shorebird eggs and debris littering the area after launches, including cement and insulation found on State Park land. LeClaire also witnessed a dense dust cloud enveloping a nesting area during a launch.
Last year, environmental and cultural groups filed a lawsuit against the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) for failing to fully assess the impact of Starbase on the surrounding area. The FAA has denied these claims. The South Texas Environmental Justice Network has also expressed concerns about the potential environmental and social impacts of the facility on the area, including its proximity to sensitive wildlife habitat and cultural sites.
Residents like Elazar Villafranca have mixed feelings about SpaceX’s presence in the area. Villafranca has installed a sculpture of Elon Musk on his property after being paid by SpaceX to dump concrete and dirt. Overall, there are conflicting perspectives on the benefits and drawbacks of SpaceX’s operations in Boca Chica, with some highlighting potential environmental and cultural concerns while others see economic opportunities.
