Following the collapse of Bashar Assad’s government, Christians in Syria gathered for the first Sunday services with a sense of transformation and hope for a better future. Schools in Damascus also reopened, signaling a return to normalcy as the country navigates its post-Assad era. However, challenges remain as the new leadership has yet to outline a clear governance plan, and the main rebel group, Hayat Tahrir al-Sham, is still designated as a terrorist organization.
The interim government is expected to rule until March, with calls for U.N.-supervised elections and accountability for war crimes. Foreign ministers from various countries agreed on the importance of preventing terror groups from gaining ground in Syria.
Israel also expressed no interest in conflict with Syria and approved plans to encourage population growth in the Golan Heights, a move criticized by Qatar as a violation of international law.
Syria’s minority groups, including Christians, have been urged to be respected and protected by the new leadership. As the country navigates through this period of change, there is a sense of hope and cautious optimism for a more inclusive and peaceful future for Syria.
