Paralympian Keith Gabel Distributes Gear to Athletes at the Hartford Ski Spectacular

World Champion Adaptive Snowboarder Keith Gabel Surprises Athletes with Custom Gear at Hartford Ski Spectacular

Breckenridge, Colo. — In a heartwarming display of support for adaptive sports, three-time Paralympian Keith Gabel surprised 15 athletes at the Hartford Ski Spectacular by presenting them with custom adaptive equipment. Gabel, who has been an avid snowboarder since he was 15, faced a life-changing challenge at 20 when he lost a leg in an industrial accident. Undeterred, he returned to snowboarding just three months post-amputation, expressing that the mountain is his "church" where he feels at peace with nature.

The Hartford has been a strong ally of the adaptive sports community, donating thousands of specialized equipment pieces in the past six years. Gabel utilized his collaboration with the Hartford to pay it forward, announcing the surprise gear distribution with heartfelt celebrations for the athletes and capturing memorable moments through photographs. "It warms my soul," Gabel remarked on the emotional experience.

Adaptive sports gear often comes with a hefty price tag—up to 15 times that of standard equipment—placing a financial strain on athletes. Gabel emphasized the impactful difference that alleviating such costs can make in the lives of these individuals.

Among the recipients was skier Brian Armbruster, who navigates the world with limited vision due to retinitis pigmentosa. "I rely on my guide to tell me right or left," Armbruster shared, expressing his aspirations to join the 2026 Paralympic National Team. "Just being in an atmosphere with great athletes… it’s an opportunity of a lifetime."

The event showcased the power of community and the importance of accessibility in sports, reaffirming the commitment of dedicated individuals and organizations like the Hartford towards fostering inclusion and support for adaptive athletes.
