Tragic Collision on Boulder Creek Path Claims Life of Runner
Boulder, CO – A tragic incident unfolded on Sunday afternoon when a runner and a cyclist collided on the Boulder Creek Path, resulting in the death of the runner. The tragic accident occurred around 1:15 p.m. at the junction of the Creek Path and Foothills Bikeway.
The Boulder Police Department reported that both individuals, coming from opposite directions, were aware of each other prior to the collision but were unable to evade the accident. Upon impact, both men fell, hitting their heads on the cement.
The runner, 73-year-old Richard E. Poley from Boulder, was rushed to a local hospital in critical condition. Sadly, he succumbed to his injuries on Tuesday. In contrast, the 34-year-old cyclist, who was wearing a helmet at the time, escaped without injuries.
Authorities informed The Denver Gazette that they are unable to assess the cyclist’s speed during the incident, as the protocols for investigating such accidents differ from those applied to motor vehicle collisions. After a thorough review with the district attorney’s office, Boulder police concluded that no charges would be filed in relation to the crash. Additionally, they stated there was no indication that drugs or alcohol played a role in the incident.
This unfortunate event has raised concerns about safety on shared pathways, as both parties appeared to be exercising caution before the collision occurred. The Boulder community mourns the loss of Richard E. Poley as they reflect on the importance of road and path safety for all users.
