Boulder Embraces Small Business Saturday Amid Holiday Shopping Surge
As the holiday shopping season kicks off following Thanksgiving, small businesses in Boulder are looking to make the most of Small Business Saturday. This year, Boulder Spirits made a significant debut, opening its first retail space and tasting room on Pearl Street, following years of planning by owner Alistair Brogan. "For us to start selling our bottles here retail side is a huge impact," Brogan highlighted, noting the unique offerings that represent Colorado and the Boulder community.
Boulder’s downtown is primarily comprised of small businesses, which make up about 70% of the area, according to the Downtown Boulder Partnership. Long-standing businesses like Hurdle’s Jewelers are also part of this vibrant local scene. Owner Nicole Hurdle, whose family has operated the jewelry store since 1947, expressed the special connection they share with customers: "We’ve sold engagement rings and wedding bands to grandparents and then parents and then their kids," she shared.
The sentiment around Small Business Saturday emphasizes the importance of supporting local initiatives, with Hurdle stating, "Shopping small is everything to us down here. It’s literally the heart of our community." To encourage more shoppers, she reminded the public that city parking garages will offer free parking on weekends throughout December—an effort to alleviate concerns about accessibility while promoting local retail.
As Boulder’s small businesses brace for an influx of holiday shoppers, they hope the spirit of community shopping extends beyond just one weekend, reinforcing the crucial role that these establishments play in the local economy.
