North Korean President Kim Jong-un has pledged unwavering support for Russia’s war in Ukraine during a meeting with Russia’s Defence Minister, Andrei Belousov. The meeting took place as a Russia military delegation visited North Korea amid concerns about the countries’ growing cooperation.
Kim and Belousov discussed strengthening their strategic partnership and defending each country’s sovereignty, security interests, and international justice. Kim expressed support for Russia’s actions in Ukraine, criticizing the U.S. for allowing Ukraine to strike targets inside Russia.
Reports suggest that North Korea has sent over 10,000 troops to Russia, with some engaging in combat. There are also concerns that Russia could provide advanced weapons technology to North Korea in return for support.
South Korea has raised alarm about Russia potentially giving North Korea air defense missile systems and other military technologies. The two countries have reaffirmed their strategic partnership as crucial to defending against aggression from imperialists.
The meeting comes after Kim and Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a treaty in June requiring immediate military assistance in case of an attack. This agreement is seen as a significant defense deal between the two countries since the end of the Cold War. Both North Korea and Russia continue to deny reports of weapons shipments and movements of North Korean troops.
