Colorado State Patrol and CDOT Host Chain Law Conference in Grand Junction
Grand Junction, CO – On Tuesday, the Colorado State Patrol (CSP) and the Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) will hold an important conference for commercial vehicle drivers to discuss the newly implemented motor vehicle chain laws that took effect on September 1, 2024. The event, scheduled for 10:30 a.m. at the Pilot Truck Stop located at 2195 Highway 6 & 50, can also be viewed live on YouTube.
The updated laws significantly expand the areas where commercial motor vehicles (CMVs) must carry chains. CMVs with a combined weight exceeding 16,000 pounds, those transporting 16 or more passengers, or used in commerce are required to carry chains or alternative traction devices (ATDs) along specific corridors, irrespective of weather conditions, from September 1 through May 31. Key routes affected include portions of I-70, Colorado Highway 9, Route 40, U.S. Route 50, U.S. Route 160, U.S. Route 285, and U.S. Route 550.
Under the new regulations, large vehicles must affix chains or ATDs to all drive tires. While these laws are referred to as "commercial," they apply to all qualifying vehicles, including RVs and travel trailers, based on their weight ratings.
Non-compliance can result in penalties of up to $500, with an additional $79 surcharge, while vehicles blocking roadways face fines of up to $1,000 plus a $157 surcharge. With I-70 being a vital transportation route often susceptible to closures due to weather, CSP and CDOT officials emphasize the importance of understanding these requirements to ensure safe and efficient travel.
CSP Capt. Matt Ozanic and CDOT maintenance superintendent John David will provide further information during the conference. More details can also be found on the Colorado State Patrol’s website.
