Sam Benastick, a man who went missing while hiking in the Canadian wilderness in October, was found alive earlier this week after nearly 50 days. He was discovered by two men on the Redfern Lake trail, where he had built a camp and shelter in a dried-out creek bed. Benastick survived by staying in his car for a couple of days, then camping out on a mountainside and eventually moving to the valley where he was found. He was taken to the hospital with frostbite and smoke inhalation.
His mother, Sandra, provided updates on his disappearance in Facebook groups, and over 100 volunteers and officials aided in the search efforts. Redfern-Keily Park, where Benastick was hiking, is a remote area in British Columbia known for its challenging terrain and wildlife. The park has glaciers, waterfalls, and meadows, and hikers can encounter animals like grizzly bears, wolves, lynx, and bison. The area also experiences extreme weather conditions with temperatures below zero.
Authorities were relieved to find Benastick alive after such a long time missing, and they emphasized the importance of being prepared and cautious when venturing into the wilderness. Madonna Saunderson of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police expressed gratitude for the positive outcome after his extended disappearance.
