A blast of Arctic air is set to bring bone-chilling temperatures across much of the central and eastern U.S. The northern Plains and upper Midwest will experience single-digit temperatures along with dangerously cold wind chills. The cold air will move south and east, dropping temperatures to near freezing from central Texas to northern Florida and up to New York. About 196 million Americans will wake up to below-freezing temperatures on Saturday morning.
Snowfall is expected across the Great Lakes region, with warnings and advisories in place for hazardous driving conditions. Winter storm warnings and advisories are in place in states from northern Wisconsin to western New York, where snowfall could reach up to 4 feet by the end of the weekend. There could be snowfall rates of up to 5 inches per hour in some areas.
Freeze warnings and watches are in effect for Texas, Florida, and other parts of the South with temperatures expected to drop to the low 30s. Rain showers and thunderstorms are expected in Florida and the central Gulf Coast states as a slow-moving front moves across the region.
Overall, the Arctic blast is expected to bring freezing temperatures, heavy snowfall, and hazardous driving conditions to much of the central and eastern U.S. during one of the nation’s busiest travel periods. Residents are advised to take precautions to stay safe and protect themselves from the cold.
