West Palm Beach, Fla. – Recently elected President Donald Trump hailed progress in curbing illegal immigration during a telephone conversation with Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum, following his threats to impose severe tariffs on Mexico and Canada. In the wake of these threats aimed at dismantling illegal immigration and drug trafficking, Sheinbaum emphasized Mexico’s commitment to addressing immigration without closing its borders, stating that her government would respond reciprocally to any tariffs.
Despite Trump’s assertion that Sheinbaum agreed to enhance migration control, the Mexican leader clarified on social media that their discussion did not center around tariffs. She highlighted Mexico’s existing strategies to manage migrant flows, emphasizing a humanitarian approach that respects human rights. Sheinbaum noted, “Mexico’s position is not to close borders but to build bridges between governments and people,” suggesting a cooperative approach to immigration.
The threats of tariffs have already affected the financial markets. Trump indicated that even if the tariffs do not materialize, the threat itself serves as a political tool. Meanwhile, he announced plans for a national advertising campaign to raise awareness about the dangers of fentanyl, a point he and Sheinbaum discussed.
President Biden, speaking from Nantucket, criticized Trump’s tariff proposal, warning it could harm relationships with North American allies. He highlighted the recent drop in illegal immigration, attributing it to enhanced cooperation between the Biden administration and Mexico.
As discussions continue, both leaders have left open the question of future tariffs, which could significantly impact American consumers and the economies of both nations, threatening the stability of existing trade agreements formed during Trump’s previous administration.
