The reopening of Notre-Dame Cathedral, five years after devastating fire

French President Emmanuel Macron will showcase the recently restored Notre-Dame Cathedral, which was nearly destroyed by a massive fire five years ago. The cathedral, one of the world’s most famous tourist attractions, was undergoing renovations when the fire broke out in 2019. Macron will host a televised tour to mark the cathedral’s reopening, which is set for December 7.

Notre-Dame Cathedral, which began construction in 1163, is renowned for its architectural beauty and symbolic decorations. It is home to important relics such as the Crown of Thorns, believed to have been worn by Jesus Christ. The cathedral was famously depicted in Victor Hugo’s novel “The Hunchback of Notre Dame” and has appeared in numerous films and artworks.

The fire that devastated Notre-Dame was determined to be accidental, caused by either an electrical fault or a smoldering cigarette. Despite the destruction, hundreds of firefighters worked tirelessly to save precious sculptures and relics. The restoration project involved thousands of workers and cost nearly $800 million, with the goal of preserving the cathedral’s historical significance.

Macron emphasized the importance of rebuilding Notre-Dame, stating that it is a symbol of French history and destiny. The restoration efforts have brought new life to the iconic cathedral, ensuring that it continues to captivate visitors for generations to come.
