Silverthorne Ranks Among Top Fall Fly Fishing Destinations

SILVERTHORNE, Colo. — Fishing enthusiasts will be pleased to know that Silverthorne has secured the No. 9 spot on FishingBooker.com’s list of the best fall fly fishing locations in the U.S. However, the area’s outstanding fishing conditions extend well into winter, allowing for year-round fishing experiences.

Ben McCormick, owner and guide at Cutthroat Anglers in Silverthorne, highlighted that Colorado boasts more winter fly fishing opportunities than many other regions. He explained that the key to successful winter fishing lies in understanding the local conditions. "As temperatures drop, only the most dedicated anglers remain, making November an excellent month for solitude on the river," he noted.

A favorite fishing location is just downstream of Dillon Reservoir Dam, where warmer waters released from the dam create ideal conditions known as tailwaters. These areas offer stable water temperatures that are conducive to trout fishing throughout the winter months. McCormick emphasized that anglers can fish here every day of the winter, drawing fewer crowds during the colder months.

Harlan Kimball, the store manager at Cutthroat Anglers, encouraged customers to embrace winter fishing and reassured them that the Blue River offers excellent year-round fishing. He noted that fish tend to be more comfortable and active in November, making it a prime time to hit the waters.

For those considering a fishing excursion this winter, Kimball’s advice is clear: "Don’t take it too seriously. It’s still just fishing."

With its beautiful scenery and peaceful fishing spots, Silverthorne promises an enjoyable fly fishing experience, regardless of the season.
