The Secretary of State has ordered a recount in Colorado state House District 19 where former state rep. Dan Woog of Erie defeated his Democratic opponent, Jilliare McMillan of Longmont, by 109 votes. The recount is mandatory due to the close margin of victory, with Woog receiving 50.10% of the vote compared to McMillan’s 49.90%. The recount must be completed by Dec. 6, the same deadline for another recount in House District 16 in Colorado Springs, where Rep. Stephanie Vigil trails her Republican challenger by just six votes.
In other election news, Republicans took three seats held by Democrats in the state House, narrowing the Democratic advantage from 46-19 to 43-21. This shift cost Democrats their supermajority in the House. One of the Republican victories was in House District 50 in Greeley, where Ryan Gonzalez defeated incumbent Rep. Mary Young by over a percentage point.
Interestingly, the closest race in the state this year was in the Western Slope House District 58 Republican primary, where Rep.-elect Larry Suckla of Cortez defeated Mark Roeber of Paonia by just three votes. This margin was confirmed by a recount in the eight-county district.
Overall, these election results have led to a shift in the balance of power in the Colorado state House and demonstrate the importance of every vote in determining election outcomes.
