Denver’s 51st Annual Turkey Trot Draws Crowds and Raises Funds for Local Charity

Denver, CO – On Thanksgiving morning, Washington Park was abuzz with festive energy as approximately 10,200 runners participated in the 51st annual Mile High United Way Turkey Trot. This year’s event marked a significant milestone not just in participation but also in fundraising efforts, generating over $641,000 for the nonprofit organization.

Among the participants were friends Connor Healey, dressed in whimsical pilgrim costumes, and others sporting creative outfits including turkey onesies and plush food hats. "This is my first Turkey Trot in Denver," remarked Healey, who shared his love for the Thanksgiving tradition originating from his home state of Massachusetts. "It’s great to bring a piece of that with me."

The Turkey Trot has evolved into a cherished Thanksgiving tradition in the U.S., characterized this year by its inaugural costume contest, which celebrated creativity with awards for a chef in a turkey costume and an inflatable dinosaur. The atmosphere was filled with camaraderie and laughter, as participants snapped photos together while awaiting the start of the race.

The event serves as the largest fundraiser for Mile High United Way, which aids the community with programs addressing issues ranging from housing to food insecurity. CEO Christine Benero emphasized the importance of the funds raised, stating, “This year, it feels even more important," in light of rising needs within the community. The organization aims to continue providing essential services throughout the year, not just on Thanksgiving, through its programs, including the crucial 211 call center.

As participants crossed the finish line, excitement grew, not only for the holiday festivities but also the sense of purpose in supporting local initiatives. The Turkey Trot remains a testament to community spirit and the power of coming together for a good cause.
