Waterstones booksellers have announced the books of the year for 2024, with Butter by Asako Yuzuki winning book of the year and I am Rebel by Ross Montgomery named children’s book of the year. Butter, translated from Japanese by Polly Barton, is inspired by a real-life case of a killer who poisoned her lovers, following the story of a journalist obsessed with a convicted killer. Yuzuki expressed her happiness at the recognition and hopes the book inspires readers to question social norms. Waterstones praised Butter for its storytelling, social commentary, and exceptional book design.
I Am Rebel tells the heartwarming story of the bond between a dog and his owner, Tom. Montgomery, the author, expressed his excitement at winning and wants children to feel joy and wonder when reading his book. The winners will receive support from Waterstones shops and booksellers across the UK.
Other shortlisted titles this year included works by Sally Rooney, Colm Tóibín, and Holly Jackson. Previous winners of book of the year from Waterstones include Hamnet by Maggie O’Farrell and Normal People by Sally Rooney. Sales of the winners from previous years soared after the announcement, with Murdle by GT Karber becoming the overall Christmas No 1. Waterstones aims to promote reading for pleasure with these acclaimed titles, encouraging readers of all ages to engage with captivating storytelling.
