Press Release: Thoughtful Gift Ideas for Alzheimer’s Caregivers and Patients This Holiday Season
DENVER — As the holiday shopping season heats up, the Alzheimer’s Association encourages families to consider gifts that cater to the unique needs of loved ones living with Alzheimer’s disease. Jim Herlihy, a spokesperson for the organization, highlights how preferences evolve with the progression of the disease, necessitating thoughtful gift selections.
Herlihy suggests several gift ideas tailored for individuals in various stages of Alzheimer’s. For early-stage patients, organizing tools like labeled drawers, photo albums with names, and reminder boards can be particularly helpful. Gift cards for activities or transportation services can also encourage continued engagement in joyful activities. Additionally, GPS trackers can enhance safety, while memory calendars featuring family photos help retain personal connections.
For those in middle to late stages of the disease, musical playlists of familiar tunes can evoke cherished memories and potentially improve communication abilities. Other recommended gifts include comfortable clothing, personalized photo collages, soothing items to aid anxiety, and adaptive dining equipment that promotes independence during meals.
Herlihy also emphasizes the importance of supporting caregivers, suggesting gifts that offer them respite. Homemade coupon books redeemable for chores or personal errands can provide caregivers with much-needed breaks, allowing them to focus on self-care.
With approximately 91,000 Coloradans affected by Alzheimer’s and around 182,000 caregivers, the Alzheimer’s Association offers a 24/7 helpline at 800-272-3900. During the holiday season, calls to the helpline increase, as families reconnect and notice changes in their loved ones.
This year, give the gift of thoughtfulness and support, ensuring that both patients and caregivers feel cared for and acknowledged during the holidays.
