A winter storm moving towards the Northeast is expected to bring a white Thanksgiving to parts of the Midwest and Northeast, with heavy snowfall expected in New York and southern Vermont. The storm will also bring frigid air and lake-effect snow to areas in the upper Midwest and Northeast, potentially causing dangerous driving conditions on major highways. Macy’s Thanksgiving Day parade marchers in New York City dealt with chilly rain, and the Midwest is experiencing some of the coldest temperatures of the season so far.
The snowfall is good news for skiers, as popular resorts in western New York are expected to receive their first major dose of powder this season. However, the snow could create delays for holiday travelers and dangerous conditions on highways, with blizzard-like conditions potentially causing multi-car pileups or visibility issues for drivers. Some areas could see freezing wind chills as low as negative 40 degrees, creating a “life-threatening situation” on interstates running through New York.
Earlier in the week, snowfall affected parts of California and Colorado, closing down roads and delaying flights. Ski resorts in western New York are preparing for an influx of snow, with openings expected within the next week. Overall, the Thanksgiving Day storm is set to bring wintry weather to much of the country, potentially disrupting travel plans and causing hazardous conditions for drivers.
