The Fourth District Appellate Court has reversed the detention order of former Sangamon County Sheriff deputy Sean P. Grayson, who is charged in the fatal shooting of Sonya Massey. Grayson will soon be released with conditions determined by a hearing set for Monday. The court did not specify what those conditions may be, but they could include home confinement or monitoring. Grayson’s attorney argued that he is not a flight risk and is dealing with complications from Stage 3 colon cancer. Judge Cadagin had previously ordered Grayson to be detained due to his behavior during and after the shooting. The shooting of Massey, a 36-year-old Black woman, was captured on bodycam and led to national outrage. The U.S. Department of Justice has launched an investigation into the sheriff’s office’s interactions with Black people and individuals with behavioral health disabilities. Grayson’s release is pending other issues to be resolved, including a potential appeal by the State to the Illinois Supreme Court.
