Olde Town Arvada Businesses Hit Hard by Smash-and-Grab Burglaries Ahead of Holiday Season
ARVADA, Colo. — Several businesses in Olde Town Arvada are facing significant financial challenges following a string of smash-and-grab burglaries. In the past two weeks, at least three shops have been targeted, prompting an ongoing investigation by Arvada police to identify the culprits.
Sharon Hodge, owner of Pet Wants Arvada, described the chaos her store faced after a break-in last Monday. "All of our product was broken and pushed over, and glass was everywhere… cash register was gone," Hodge recounted, totaling her losses at around $2,500. "This is not an inexpensive part of town to have a shop, so this was devastating to us," she added, highlighting the emotional toll alongside the financial impact.
Another victim, Judi Mitchell of Burd’s Nest Art Gallery, shared her experience of witnessing a thief on surveillance footage stealing cash from her establishment. "That $400 to $500 greatly impacts me. That’s the month’s profits," she noted, emphasizing the limitations such theft imposes on supporting local artists.
Both business owners are now pinning their hopes on increased foot traffic during the upcoming Black Friday and Small Business Saturday. "Buy local instead of Amazon… buy local," urged Mitchell, encouraging community support during this crucial shopping season.
A GoFundMe campaign has been established to assist Pet Wants Arvada with recovery efforts. At this time, Arvada police have not made any arrests in connection with the burglaries. Local businesses remain hopeful for a successful holiday season despite the recent setbacks.
