Raj Matharu, a 31-year-old man from Northridge, Los Angeles, has been indicted for attempting to smuggle more than 30 pounds of methamphetamine onto an Australia-bound flight out of LAX. The drugs, hidden in clothing items, were discovered by airport screening personnel. U.S. Attorney Martin Estrada commended law enforcement for catching the contraband-laced wardrobe, stating that drug dealers are continually finding new methods to smuggle narcotics. Matharu was arrested at the airport as he attempted to board his flight, and if convicted, he could face a prison sentence ranging from 10 years to life. The clothing items were found to be caked with methamphetamine, which had been washed into the fabric to avoid detection. Matharu was released on a $10,000 bond pending an arraignment hearing scheduled for December 2. Prosecutors emphasized the seriousness of drug trafficking and its impact on communities worldwide, noting that seizures like this can save lives. The clothing items containing methamphetamine included shirts, sweaters, socks, boxers, and even a cow-patterned onesie pajama set. Authorities intercepted Matharu on the jet bridge leading to the plane.
