Boise State Pulls Out of Mountain West Volleyball Tournament

Boise State Withdraws from Mountain West Women’s Volleyball Tournament Amid Controversy

LAS VEGAS (AP) — In a surprising turn of events, Boise State has opted out of the Mountain West women’s volleyball tournament, despite having secured a semifinal spot against San Jose State. This decision follows a history of boycotts against the Spartans, which saw San Jose State benefit from six forfeit victories during the season.

Boise State expressed that the choice to withdraw was challenging but necessary, stating, "Our team overcame forfeitures to earn a spot in the tournament field… they should not have to forgo this opportunity." This declaration came shortly after the Broncos defeated Utah State in the quarterfinals.

San Jose State, seeded second in the tournament after a first-round bye, will advance directly to the championship match, scheduled for Saturday. Their opponents will be determined in a matchup between top-seeded Colorado State and No. 5 San Diego State, both of whom have played against the Spartans this season.

The backdrop for Boise State’s decision includes political tensions surrounding women’s sports and the participation of transgender athletes, notably following Idaho’s "Defending Women’s Sports Act." Concerns were amplified by a lawsuit filed in Colorado regarding a purported transgender player on San Jose State’s roster, which was upheld in court.

Boise State’s withdrawal is emblematic of a broader debate in collegiate athletics regarding inclusivity and fairness, especially following the cancellations of games by teams including Wyoming and Nevada, which cited opposition to policies affecting female athletics. As the situation evolves, responses from San Jose State and the Mountain West Conference are awaited, with the championship match continuing as planned.
