Aurora Residents Celebrate Long-Awaited Safety Overhaul at Dangerous Intersection
AURORA, Colo. — After years of advocacy, residents of Aurora’s Cross Creek community are finally seeing action to improve safety at the notorious intersection of North Catawba Way and East 6th Parkway. Over the past decade, the intersection has recorded 15 crashes, including a fatal motorcycle accident that occurred in 2022, igniting community concerns about the looming dangers for pedestrians and drivers alike.
Jerald Lane, president of the Cross Creek Metro District, has been instrumental in pushing for enhancements at this location. With 400 nearby homes and a community pool frequented by children, Lane voiced worries about speeding and the lack of crosswalks or traffic signals. His persistent efforts included submitting a traffic calming application in 2020.
Thanks to a thorough assessment of the area, Aurora officials have approved a comprehensive overhaul of the intersection. City of Aurora Principal Engineer Carl Harline confirmed that funding has been secured and work is now underway to install a traffic signal, along with pedestrian crossings featuring push buttons. Currently, the intersection supports around 10,000 vehicles daily, a number expected to rise with ongoing development.
Lane expressed his relief and satisfaction, stating, “I feel like my voice is finally being heard. I’m really happy to see something happen at this intersection because it was much needed.” The project is anticipated to be completed by summer 2025, a timeline that marks the end of a long wait for community members striving for safety improvements.
As the construction progresses, local residents are hopeful that these enhancements will significantly reduce accidents and enhance the safety of everyone who traverses the busy intersection.
