President-elect Donald Trump nominated Jamieson Greer to serve as the United States trade representative, a position critical to Trump’s plans to impose new tariffs on imports. Greer, who previously worked in Trump’s first administration and played a role in tariff hikes on goods from China, will focus on reducing the trade deficit, supporting American industries, and expanding export markets. Trump also announced executive actions to impose tariffs on products from Mexico, Canada, and China, prompting concerns from economists about potential consumer cost increases. Officials from China, Mexico, and Canada criticized the tariff pledge, warning against a trade war. Greer, a former Air Force lawyer, is currently a partner at a law firm in Washington. In addition to Greer, Trump filled out his economic team with the appointments of Kevin Hassett as director of the White House National Economic Council and Vince Haley as director of the Domestic Policy Council. Hassett and Haley have prior experience in economic and policy roles within the Trump administration. Trump stated that Hassett would help American families recover from inflation and work on improving tax cuts and trade relationships with other countries.
