The FBI has confirmed that several picks for President-elect Donald Trump’s incoming administration have been targeted with bomb threats and swatting incidents. Trump spokesperson Karoline Leavitt mentioned that cabinet nominees Lee Zeldin and Elise Stefanik were among those threatened. Zeldin and Stefanik both confirmed that they had been targeted but were safe. The FBI also reported that incoming chief of staff Susie Wiles, former attorney general pick Matt Gaetz, and his replacement Pam Bondi were also targeted.
The recent incidents have raised concerns about political violence in the US, particularly after the attack on the US Capitol in January 2021. In the 2024 election cycle, two apparent assassination attempts were made against Trump. Despite Trump accusing Democrats of inciting violence, critics argue that he has contributed to a hostile political climate as well. President Joe Biden called for a rejection of violence and inflammatory rhetoric in American politics. Leavitt cited Trump as a role model in handling threats, emphasizing that intimidation and violence will not deter the administration.
The FBI is investigating these threats and has urged the public to report suspicious activities to law enforcement. The incidents serve as a reminder of the ongoing tensions in American politics and the need to address divisive rhetoric and ensure the safety of political figures.
