CU Buffs suffer major setback in playoff ranking, facing significant challenges ahead

The Colorado Buffaloes have dropped significantly in the College Football Playoff ranking after a recent loss to the Kansas Jayhawks. Despite the setback, the Buffs still have a chance to make it to the 12-team tournament if they win, get help to reach the Big 12 Championship, and then win that while receiving support from teams around the country. Their final regular season game is against Oklahoma State on Senior Day, where they are favored by 17 points.
The new format of 12 teams in the CFP includes positions for conference winners, giving the Buffaloes a shot if they can make it back to the Big 12 Championship Game. However, it seems unlikely that Colorado will reach the CFP field or the conference title game based on their current standings.
This season marks only the third time the Buffs have been ranked in the CFP rankings, with their highest ranking coming in 2016 at No. 8 before losing the Pac-12 Championship Game. The CFP ranking has been a key factor in determining the true champion of college football since its inception in 2014, ensuring that situations like Colorado’s controversial 1990 title are not repeated. The final ranking that will decide the 12 teams will be released on Dec. 8, with the tournament kicking off on Dec. 20 and culminating in the National Championship Game on Jan. 20 in Atlanta.
