Mexico’s President cautions that tariffs imposed by Trump could exacerbate US inflation

Mexico’s president, Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo, responded to President-elect Donald Trump’s threat of imposing tariffs on goods produced in Mexico with a warning about the potential economic consequences for both countries. Sheinbaum also mentioned the crackdown on migration that Mexico has implemented this year in response to the Biden-Harris administration’s opening of a humanitarian pathway for migrants. She expressed concern about the potential inflation and job losses that could result from Trump’s proposed tariffs. Additionally, she addressed the issue of fentanyl trafficking to the U.S., stating that Mexico sees it as a public health problem that needs to be addressed in the U.S. She warned Trump about the risks of escalating tariff threats and emphasized the need for both countries to work towards mutually beneficial solutions.
