Winter Weather Alert for Colorado: Heavy Snow Expected in Mountains, Rain to Snow Transition in Denver
Colorado is bracing for a significant winter storm, as a First Alert Weather Day has been declared for Wednesday due to expected snow and plunging temperatures. The storm is already affecting the mountainous regions, where accumulations of 1 to 3 feet are predicted by Wednesday afternoon. A Winter Storm Warning is in effect across the majority of northern, central, and southern mountain areas, with travel expected to be challenging.
Residents in the Denver metro area will experience a transition from rain to slushy snow starting Tuesday night. The National Weather Service forecasts total snow accumulation between 1 to 4 inches within the city and up to 9 inches on the south and west sides of the metro. In contrast, northern and eastern sections may see only trace amounts. Snowfall will intensify Tuesday night before tapering off by Wednesday afternoon.
With heavy snowfall anticipated, an Avalanche Warning has been issued for the West Elk Mountains, Southern Sawatch Ranch, and Monarch Pass, where dangerous conditions may arise from thick snow slabs over weak snowpacks.
Temperatures are expected to drop significantly following the storm, with highs in the 30s on Wednesday and only reaching the teens by Thanksgiving morning. Cold, icy conditions will persist into the weekend, with daytime highs remaining in the 30s and 40s.
Residents are advised to prepare for winter weather hazards while travel in the mountains should be approached with caution. As the season transitions, the focus shifts to ensuring safety against the impending winter chill and potential snow hazards in Colorado.
