President-elect Donald Trump is reportedly considering appointing Richard Grenell, his former intelligence chief, as a special envoy for the Russia-Ukraine conflict. Grenell, who previously served as Trump’s ambassador to Germany and acting director of national intelligence, could play a significant role in the administration’s efforts to address the ongoing conflict if he is selected for the position. While there is currently no special envoy specifically dedicated to the Russia-Ukraine conflict, Trump is considering creating the role. However, there is no guarantee that Grenell will ultimately accept the position if offered.
Some of Grenell’s past remarks, such as advocating for the creation of “autonomous zones” and expressing hesitancy about Ukraine joining NATO in the near future, may give Ukraine’s leaders pause. Despite this, his supporters highlight his extensive diplomatic experience and knowledge of European affairs. Grenell previously campaigned for Trump and was considered a top contender for the position of secretary of state, but was ultimately passed over for Senator Marco Rubio.
The Trump transition team declined to comment on the potential appointment, stating that all personnel decisions will be announced by the president-elect when they are made. Grenell did not respond to requests for comment. Trump has pledged to swiftly end the conflict in Ukraine, although his specific plans for achieving this goal have not been disclosed.
