Ahmad Al Aliwi Alissa, the man who gunned down ten people inside a Colorado supermarket in 2021, claimed he was having ‘fun’ during his rampage, survivors testified in court. Pharmacist Sarah Chen recounted hearing him screaming, “This is fun,” as she and her coworkers hid from him. Alissa, who started shooting outside the store before moving inside, has pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity in the shooting. His attorneys argue that he suffered from treatment-resistant schizophrenia and couldn’t distinguish between right and wrong at the time of the attack.
Despite his plea, no one disputes that Alissa was the shooter. He faces 10 counts of first-degree murder and multiple counts of attempted murder. The victims included King Soopers employees and shoppers, including a police officer and a longtime store employee. Witnesses described Alissa’s methodical shooting, with pauses in between shots. Investigators also found that he researched mass shootings before carrying out his attack.
After years of legal turmoil over his mental state, a judge ruled last October that Alissa was fit to stand trial. The trial, which began last week, is expected to conclude at the end of the month. The chilling testimony of survivors sheds light on the terrifying events that unfolded inside the grocery store in Boulder, Colorado.
