Thornton City Leaders Take Action Following Fatal Family Crash
Thornton, Colo. – A tragic accident last month claimed the lives of four family members, leaving two brothers to cope with the loss of their parents and sisters after a speeding driver collided with their SUV. This heart-wrenching incident has prompted city officials to prioritize road safety measures aimed at preventing similar tragedies in the future.
In light of this crash and other recent traffic incidents, Thornton leadership is seeking community input to enhance safety on local streets. A traffic study is ongoing as part of the Vision Zero Action Plan, which aims to eliminate fatal and serious crashes. Recent data from the Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) indicates that from 2018 to 2022, 42 individuals were killed in traffic incidents in Thornton, and 222 were seriously injured.
City traffic engineer Darrell Alston identified Washington Street as a particular concern, labeling it part of the “High Injury Network,” highlighting corridors with a notable frequency of severe crashes. Residents, as echoed by City Council Member Kathy Henson, have expressed significant worries about speeding and compliance with traffic regulations at critical intersections.
In response, Thornton is exploring various safety initiatives, including the installation of red light cameras at two key intersections: E 88th Ave./Washington Street and E 120th Ave./Colorado Boulevard. A pilot program for these cameras is set for 2025, with funding already allocated to begin collecting critical data on driver behavior.
The Vision Zero Action Plan, now available for public review, invites community feedback ahead of the council meeting on November 19, giving residents the opportunity to contribute their insights on roadway safety enhancements.
