Crime in Aurora has seen a decrease, but retail theft remains a persistent issue for businesses. Aurora police have been cracking down on shoplifters at a popular store, making arrests that have revealed suspects already wanted for other crimes. Officer Joseph Valdez emphasized the importance of not overlooking small crimes, as they are often linked to more serious offenses.
The operation at the Target store on Ellsworth Avenue was prompted by ongoing incidents reported by the store’s loss prevention team. Mayor Mike Coffman met with APD and Target leaders to discuss ways to combat retail theft. The closure of a nearby Walmart Neighborhood Market due to high theft losses had a negative impact on Target, with the store now facing frequent theft incidents.
The impact of shoplifting extends beyond the stolen items, affecting prices and customer safety. Valdez noted that the presence of police deters thieves and ensures a safer shopping environment. Several arrests made during the operation revealed suspects in possession of drugs and with outstanding warrants for other crimes, leading to felony charges.
City council’s actions to lower the theft threshold for mandatory minimum sentences and increase jail time for repeat offenders have had a positive impact on reducing shoplifting reports at Target. APD plans to continue conducting similar operations at stores where retail theft is a common occurrence to ensure the safety and security of businesses and customers.
