The US has expressed deep concern over an Israeli airstrike in northern Gaza that reportedly killed two dozen children and resulted in at least 93 Palestinians dead or missing. State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller labeled the strike as a “horrifying incident” and called for an explanation from Israeli officials. The Biden administration had previously threatened to withdraw military support within 30 days if humanitarian conditions did not improve.
In addition to the airstrike, the US also raised alarms over legislation passed in Israel that could prohibit the operation of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA), a key aid provider in the region. The European Commission has urged Israel to repeal the decision, warning of “disastrous consequences” for Palestinian refugees. The loss of UNRWA would risk the collapse of the humanitarian system in Gaza, leaving millions of Palestinians without essential services.
Israel accuses UNRWA of being infiltrated by Hamas, while the agency denies these allegations. Aid groups currently face delays as shipments must be inspected by the Israeli military amid escalating tensions. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has expressed willingness to facilitate humanitarian aid, but critics argue that actions have yet to align with these words.
The loss of UNRWA would leave a significant gap in support for Palestinian civilians, with many expressing concerns over the impact on the already vulnerable population in Gaza. International efforts are underway to appeal the decision and find alternative solutions for delivering aid to those in need.
