Local Lakewood native Beatriz Hatz made a triumphant return to the city council chambers on Monday, this time as a Paralympic bronze medalist. Hatz, who was born with fibular hemimelia and had her lower leg amputated at just 10 months old, has overcome significant challenges to excel in sports, including winning a medal in the long jump at the 2024 Paris Summer Paralympic Games. She was honored with a mayoral proclamation and her jersey and bib from the games will be displayed in the Lakewood Civic Center atrium.
Hatz’s journey and success have not only showcased her remarkable talent and dedication but have also shattered stereotypes about disability. She has proven that with passion, hard work, and perseverance, anything is possible. Hatz emphasized the importance of her family’s support and expressed gratitude for the inclusive nature of her hometown.
Looking ahead, Hatz has her sights set on the 2028 Los Angeles Summer Paralympic Games. In the meantime, she plans to focus on growing the Paralympic movement and increasing awareness about the differences between the Olympics, Paralympics, and Special Olympics. Hatz’s story serves as an inspiration to others facing challenges and demonstrates the power of determination and resilience in achieving one’s goals.
