Israeli parliament to vote on blocking UN agency from distributing aid in Gaza amidst Middle East crisis: Live updates | Middle East and North Africa

Israel’s parliament is set to vote on two bills that would severely restrict the United Nations agency, Unrwa, from distributing aid in Gaza. The bills would remove legal immunities from the agency and limit its support for Palestinians in East Jerusalem and the West Bank. Unrwa provides essential services to millions of Palestinian refugees in the region, and if the bills pass, it would be a disaster for the people in need. The vote is scheduled for Monday evening as the Israeli parliament’s winter session begins.

In a speech, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu accused Iran of leading an “axis of evil” and reiterated that Israel will not back down in the face of threats from the country. He also highlighted Israel’s recent airstrikes on key Iranian sites and emphasized the need for total victory over militant groups in Gaza and Lebanon.

Israel is investing £400m in a new air defence system called Iron Beam, which combines laser technology with missile interception. The system is designed to enhance Israel’s defence against rockets, drones, and other threats. However, the laser system has limitations when it comes to large-scale rocket barrages.

Meanwhile, ongoing clashes between Israeli forces and Hezbollah near the Lebanon border continue to escalate, resulting in casualties on both sides. The situation in the region remains volatile, with calls for an immediate ceasefire and international intervention to address the humanitarian crisis in Gaza and the surrounding areas.
