Jackson Hopper is facing charges in connection with a fatal shooting at Shelby Farms.

A 22-year-old woman, Ellie Claire Young, was fatally shot in Memphis, Tennessee, last weekend by her ex-boyfriend, Jackson Hopper, in a parking lot at a public park. Hopper fled the scene but was later arrested and is facing first-degree murder charges. Young, a medical student at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center, was described as a bright and aspiring physician by friends and family. A GoFundMe campaign has been set up to cover funeral expenses and has raised nearly $44,000. Her sorority, Chi Omega-Xi Zeta Chapter, paid tribute to her as a role model.

Hopper was pursued by police through multiple counties before being detained, with a video of his arrest sparking an investigation into potential officer misconduct. Hopper appeared in court and pleaded not guilty, with efforts being made to prevent him from getting bail. The Lauderdale County Sheriff’s Office is conducting an internal affairs investigation into the arrest footage to evaluate any allegations of officer misconduct. Sheriff Brian Kelley emphasized that any findings will be made public as per the recommendations of the District Attorney.

The incident has shaken the community and sparked a conversation around domestic violence. Friends and loved ones are mourning the loss of Young and seeking justice for her tragic death.
